4 dedicated grandmothers

We recently visited 4 different grandmothers who are caring for their grandchildren due to situations caused by HIV-AIDS. Although the stories of each of these 4 families are different, they all hold one common theme: loving and committed grandmothers who have sacrificed for their grandchildren & have unfortunately been affected by the HIV-AIDS virus.

Family 1

Family 2

This grandmother cares for several of her grandchildren. Her grandson does not attend school right now because of the discrimination and stigma that others have towards him. When people from the school found out that his father died due to AIDS, he became an untouchable and more or less unwelcome to attend that school.

This young 13 year old girl was abandoned by her parents when she was very young because she was born with mental and physical disabilities. It was then that her grandmother took her in and began to care for her. When she was very young, she got an infection in her left eye and because her parents let it go untreated, she now has no vision or use of that eye.

Family 3
This grandmother is in her 70's and is caring for a few of her grandchildren. She is the mother of 16 children. 6 of those children have died. From what she knows, 2 of those died due to AIDS which is why she is now caring for her grandchildren. As you can see from the photos, she makes corn tortillas from her home and sells them to others in her neighborhood.

Family 4
This grandmother lovingly cares for her 5 year old grandson Brian. When Brian was 1 year old, his parents both died within 5 weeks of each other due to AIDS. When we were visiting her, she proudly showed us photos of Brian's mother that she still had framed and hanging in her tiny house.
